UCT GAP Funding Overview

UCT GAP Funding forms part of UCT's broader financial support framework for missing-middle undergraduate students and operates in direct relation to the NSFAS loan funding system.

All students who need financial assistance must first apply for NSFAS loan funding. NSFAS provides loan support to undergraduate students from households earning between R350 001 and R600 000 per year. Students in this income band may be financially eligible for NSFAS loans; however, funding is not guaranteed for every eligible applicant.

This is because NSFAS loan funding is allocated according to national priorities and programme-level targets, not financial eligibility alone.

The NSFAS 70% STEM Requirement

One key national priority within the NSFAS loan programme is the requirement that at least 70% of funded students must be registered in STEM programmes (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)

In practice, this means that:

  • NSFAS may assess a student as financially eligible for a loan, but
  • Available funding is prioritised for STEM students in order to meet the 70% requirement.

As a result, some non-STEM undergraduate students, despite meeting the income and eligibility criteria for NSFAS loans, remain unfunded. This outcome is driven by programme-level allocation rules, rather than by student ineligibility or application errors.

Where UCT GAP Funding Fits In

UCT GAP Funding exists specifically to support non-STEM undergraduate students who are eligible for NSFAS loan funding but are not funded because of the 70% STEM allocation requirement.

In simple terms:

  • NSFAS determines financial eligibility
  • National funding rules determines who is funded
  • UCT GAP Funding supports eligible students left unfunded due to those rules

UCT GAP Funding addresses this system-level shortfall so that financially eligible students are not unable to continue their studies solely because of national allocation constraints.

Who Is Supported Through UCT GAP Funding

UCT GAP Funding is intended for non-STEM undergraduate students who:

  • Applied for NSFAS loan funding as missing-middle students
  • Fall within the gross household income range of R350 001 to R600 000 per annum
  • Were assessed as financially eligible for NSFAS loan funding, but
  • Were not funded due to the NSFAS 70% STEM recipient requirement

These students qualify for support in principle, but are excluded in practice due to national funding allocation limits.

What GAP Funding Provides

UCT GAP Funding is administered as a non-repayable bursary towards tuition (course) fees.

  • The bursary typically covers between 50% and 70% of course fees, depending on gross household income.
  • Funding amounts are aligned with UCT's approved cost-of-study framework.
  • Example: A first-year BCom student may receive a tuition bursary of up to R45 000

GAP Funding is designed to reduce the tuition fee burden where NSFAS loan funding is not available.

GAP Funding Rules and Conditions

To ensure fair and responsible use of limited resources, the following rules apply:

  • If a student pays full tuition fees, GAP funding will be adjusted or withdrawn on a pro-rata basis against any credit on the student account.
  • If a student receives external funding (such as a scholarship or sponsorship), the UCT tuition bursary will be reduced accordingly, in line with cost-of-study rules.
  • GAP funding may not exceed the approved cost of study.

How Students Are Considered for GAP Funding

Students do not apply separately for UCT GAP Funding.

The process works as follows:

  1. Students apply for NSFAS loan funding.
  2. UCT identifies students who were financially eligible but unfunded due to NSFAS allocation limits.
  3. The Student Financial Aid Office assesses these students against UCT GAP Funding criteria
  4. Eligible students are contacted directly by UCT via email

UCT GAP Funding supports missing-middle, non-STEM undergraduate students who are eligible for NSFAS loans but are left unfunded because of national allocation rules.
